Kaziranga Tiger Reserve is situated along the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River in the State of Assam and it covers an area of 1033 sq. kms. It includes Kaziranga National Park, Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary and Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary. Kaziranga, the first national park of Assam and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its large numbers of the Greater One-horned Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) which is one of the flagship species of India. The park is located in Nagaon, Golaghat and Sonitpur districts, bounded in the north by the Brahmaputra and to the south by the Karbi-Anglong Hills. National Highway No. 37 separates it from the Karbi-Anglong Hills.
Until the early 1900, Kaziranga was a paradise for trophy hunters and poachers. Lord Curzon, at the behest of his wife who was concerned about the rapidly declining population of rhinos which only had around a dozen left, facilitated the declaration of Kaziranga to a Reserve Forest. In 1938, Kaziranga was opened to visitors for wildlife viewing. In 1940, Kaziranga was officially declared as wildlife sanctuary.
